Ballybunion (Irish name: Baile an Bhuinneánaigh) is a town and seaside resort off the coast of County Kerry, Ireland, approximately 30 Kilometres (19 miles) away from Tralee.
For many families and young people, Ballybunion is their Summer haven where they enjoy the lovely beaches, the warm Atlantic waters, and the thriving traditional pubs along streets of Ballybunion. One of the many attractions Ballybunion has on offer are the sandy beaches which are extremely popular among locals and tourists alike for surfing. If you happen to be in Ballybunion at the right time, not only can surfers be seen in the waters but dolphins too!
The village of Ballybunion has no shortage of character, the bustling pubs and the traditional restaurants along with the amusement arcades and playgrounds for the children make it a very popular destination for families throughout the Summer. Outside the Ballybunion Garda station is a statue of Bill Clinton, erected following his visit to the village on a golfing holiday to play on our very own golf course, which he later named as his favourite golf course.
There are two main beaches that make up the coast off Ballybunion. The two beaches are separated by a steep cliff where on top lies the ruins of a castle. The beach on the left is known as the Gent’s Beach and the beach to the right is the Ladies beach. The separate beaches accommodated men who wanted to bathe on their own away from the women and children. This tradition has not been in place for several years now, so no need to worry! One of the main attractions on the women’s beach are the seaweed baths where many people come to enjoy some relaxing therapeutic downtime. A path runs along the two beaches which leads you on the 20 minute walk to a beach overlooked by a convent known as the nun’s beach.
County Kerry (Irish name: Contae Ciarraí) is located in the South-West of Ireland in the southern province of Munster. The main town in Kerry is Tralee which is a short drive from Ballybunion. Kerry is bordered by counties Cork and Limerick. Known for its beautiful scenery, Kerry is one of the top tourist destinations in Ireland which is no surprise! On the west of the county is the Atlantic Ocean and on the North is the Shannon river which is the longest river in Ireland.
Off the coast of Kerry, there are a number of Islands including Valentia Island and the Blasket islands which can both be accessed by ferry from the mainland. Along with the scenic coastline, Kerry also boast the highest mountain range in Ireland called the McGillycuddy’s Reeks which attracts walkers from all over the world. The distinct landscape along with everything else County Kerry has to offer makes it a unique place to visit.
